Not Far From Here aims to explore the skateboarding community, not only by immersing the viewer in the urban contexts where it develops, but also by embracing cultural and social diversity to tell the story of the mutual influences between people and the places they inhabit. It’s an intimate journey that documents the intertwined experiences of the community and of some key figures within the scene, highlighting the internal contradictions that have emerged in recent years, ranging from the raw and pure aspects of this subculture to its more mainstream dimension.
Starting from Italy, I’ve collected hundreds and hundreds of images, along with several hours of footage, during various skate tours and trips throughout Europe and overseas. This 10-year “archive” tells the story of the connections between individuals, a shared sense of belonging, and the continuous observation and exploration of these places. Although expressed in different countries and cultures, sometimes with different tools and approaches, this vision has remained unchanged in my eyes and likely in the eyes of any other skater or person who lives these spaces daily. It represents a shared intention directed toward a common goal: a form of reinterpretation and reappropriation of the environments that surround us. This ongoing process of redefining public space is both an act of social participation and of personal expression, a practice and a journey that can begin right on the street in front of ones home.
NOT FAR FROM HERE is a personal vision, shaped by what is sometimes an unconscious and continuous search, a tribute to the skateboarding community and its aesthetic, in all its contradictions and nuances.
